Activity

Below is a suggested activity for use with partners, including OPDs, which complements the section content. It’s expected that you will have covered the content in advance, adjusting the delivery and level of detail to the audience.

Preparation

There are two types of cards used for this activity, which can be downloaded and printed.

You may need to print multiple sets, depending on the number of people taking part in your session. You’ll need at least one set of Question cards per group, and at least two Approaches cards for each participant.

Approaches cards cover the 12 different stigma-reduction approaches.

Question cards contain questions such as: ‘Is this approach feasible in your setting?’

Instructions

  1. Ask participants to work in small groups of two or three (group size can vary depending on the number of people involved in the session).
  2. Share out the cards among participants so that they all receive two or three Approaches cards.
  3. Provide a set of Question cards to each group.
  4. Ask them to randomly pick an Approaches card and a Question card and discuss their response.
  5. Repeat with another Question card so that they have an opportunity to consider at least two or three questions.
  6. Repeat this activity for another Approaches card.
  7. You can adapt this activity to the length of time you have at a meeting/workshop.
  8. In plenary, ask each small group to reflect back on the approaches they discussed and the key discussion points from this reflection.

Learning outcomes

Participants will have:

  1. Reflected on the wide range of stigma -reduction approaches and some of their relative strengths
  2. Discussed in greater depth how each approach might work in their context, building on their existing experience and knowledge.

The task can support prioritisation of approaches.

In this section, you have:

  • Reviewed the approaches that can contribute to reducing stigma
  • Understood that you are likely to require a combination of approaches to target different audiences, at different levels of society, and to address different types of stigma
  • Reflected on your context and discussed how feasible these approaches might be in your setting
  • Considered the core principles across different approaches
